Baguazhang Mother Palms: Heaven Palm Application

Baguazhang (Pakua Chang)

The practice of Baguazhang is fundamentally organized as a collection of "Eight Palms." The basic practice of these is called the Mother Palms. These palms are then joined in a more complex set, combining both a polar and cyclical set of energies known as the "Old Eight Palms." This application example comes from the Jiang Rong Qiao Style of Baguazhang.

Essentially the palm shape for Heaven is characterized as a palm (or palms) that face up towards "heaven." Energetically, the Heaven Palm is often associated with the season of early winter, which can produce days filled with sudden dropping or rising temperatures. To make balance, practice circle walking with the palms facing upwards, the shoulders relaxed, and the palms aligned at or below shoulder level. It could also be helpful to drink plenty of fluids, as well as black, cinnamon, or ginger tea. This might help the transition from autumn to winter be less disruptive and enhance chi flow.
