Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan Example Martial Application

Six Sealing, Four Closing

Chen Style's "6 Sealing, 4 Closing" involves lifting the opponent on one side of their body, in order to use a spiral takedown by leading the other. The application is not as unique, however, as some may think, because it utilizes the principal known as ”Lu” (or, following); in order to trap the opponent’s elbow to create an imbalance. This form also demonstrates the signature Chan Su Jing (or, silk weaving energy), which has left its impression for many generations.

What makes the form special is the combination of lifting and twisting that sets up the spiral throw. In this case, the lifted elbow helps to raise the opponent’s spine and tailbone. This lifting then creates looseness, and when the back of the neck is used as a lever and the opponent, in an attempt to regain his balance, is led downward into emptiness with the aid of the most powerful of all forces; gravity.

The Chen Style is broken down into two main forms. The first routine, or ”Yi Lu,” and a second, more active routine, emphasizing fa-jing (or, explosive force) known as ”Er Lu” (or, Cannon Fist).
